On the night of November 2nd, 2016 history was made. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years. In spite of all of the superstition and jokes, the Cubs went all the way and took home the world championship. And for those of you on the job search grind, there’s a lesson to be learned from this monumental Chicago Cubs World Series win.

Never Give Up

While this may seem obvious, it never hurts to reinforce this kernel of wisdom. The Cubs went more than a century without taking home a World Series win, many times they didn’t even make it to the playoffs. But did they ever give up? No! Season after season, they hit the field and gave it their all. And when they fell short they picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and tried again. It was their job to try, just like it’s your job to look for work. The only time defeat is certain is when you don’t try.

Give It Your All

Not only do you need to give a continuous effort, but you also need to give it your best effort. Whether it is baseball or finding a job, you need to put your best foot forward in order to achieve success. Cubs infielder Ben Zobrist described game seven of the World Series as “a heavyweight fight…just blow for blow, everybody playing their heart out.” That’s how you need to approach your job search. If you consistently “play your heart out” you will eventually see results.

Be Patient

This may be the most difficult thing to learn from the Cubs. Sometimes it takes time to see improvement and success. It took the Chicago Cubs 108 years to finally take home the trophy. In spite of the jokes and superstitious whispers of curses, the Cubs kept playing. It’s important to remember the past, but you cannot get hung up on past failures. “If you want to believe in that kind of stuff, it’s going to hold you back for a long time,” said Cubs Manager Joe Maddon. And it was that attitude that led to the Chicago Cubs World Series win! It’s hard, but you need to remain optimistic in the face of failure and try not to get frustrated. No matter how many rejections you get, you need to keep applying, keep networking, and keep building your skill set until you aced your interview and land your dream job.
