Job Interview Help Tips on how to sound more confident

A job interview is all about first impressions. You want to WOW the hiring manager with your knowledge. However, expertise alone isn’t enough to cut it. Not only do you need to know your stuff, you need the confidence to show your potential employer why you’re the best person for the job. That’s why we put together some interview help tips that will make you sound more confident!

Slow Things Down

Nothing makes you sound more anxious or scared than talking a mile a minute. There’s no rush! Take your time and slow things down when you’re speaking with your interviewer. That doesn’t mean you talk like you were raised by turtles, either. Use your best judgment to keep the pace of your speech at a natural and organic speed. If you do this, you’ll show the hiring manager that you’re comfortable answering their questions and confident in your own skills.

Don’t Qualify Your Statements

Sometimes, when people are nervous or worried about how they might be perceived, they bury their answers behind phrases like “I feel like” or “in my opinion”. Even worse, sometimes really anxious people will phrase statements as questions. Qualifications like these leech away any and all confidence you might be projecting! Own your statements. Trust yourself and your experiences. If you really know your stuff, there’s no reason to hide behind question marks or phrases like “I think”. Omitting this kind of speech will make you sound a hundred times more confident.

Avoid Filler Words

You probably use filler words a thousand times a day and don’t even realize it. What is a filler word? Um, uh, like, y’know… are all examples of sounds that we make while we’re thinking in order to fill the silence. It’s hard at first, but once you realize you’re making these sounds while you’re thinking you can train yourself to stop. There’s nothing wrong with taking a moment to pause and think. Silence is powerful, which is why so many people are uncomfortable when they are experiencing it. If you show interviewers you are comfortable taking a moment to quietly collect your thoughts, you will come off much more confident than firing straight out of the gate with a response full of likes and ums.

Sit Up Straight

Nothing makes a person appear more confident faster than good posture! Don’t slump over in your chair like you’re trying to fold in on yourself. Keep your shoulders back and your head held high. For added effect, make sure to smile and make periodic eye contact with your interviewer. Don’t go overboard though, nothing is scarier than someone staring deep into your eyes with a wide smile plastered across their face. There’s a fine line between confident and creepy.

The best way to get good at something is to practice! Don’t memorize your responses word for word, otherwise, you’ll come off as fake and phony. Rather, you just need to work on practicing applying these techniques in order to come off as confident and knowledgeable.
